O V E R A L L

Throughout this subject, I am able to develop awaremness of environmental sustainability in architectural design and ability to meet the imperative and inter-related environmental and social needs as well as make poetry with the building. Besides that, I am able to design my building through the understanding of the site analysis. Upon the completion of this project, I am able to combine the environment needs, the site topography, history and socio-cultural events, the users' experiences within simple building design in the open landscape/suburban context. Last but not least, I have learned to produce drawings both 2D and 3D, modelling and verbal presentaion to communicate and visualize architectural design and ideas based on clustered spatial typology.

P R O J E C T   1 - Exploring the environmental poetics

Project 1 is about exploring the environmental poetics of a structure that respond to the basic natural context such as the sun, wind, heat, cold, energy issue and the existing context. Students  are required to design a structure within an open area applying ideas of environmental sustainability in architectural design. The sturcture should provide both a shelter and suitable environment for users.

In a group of 3, students were asked to design a Gateway that is located in Taylor's University. This gateway has to serve 2 main purposes which are students' activities areas and security surveillance. There is no restriction on structure desgin or materials to be used nor shall budget constraints other than the unit be practical, useful and manageable in terms of its operations and upkeep. Project must demontrate sound construction and good understanding of building economics. The structure should response to the site and existing context and access requirements which are essential criteria and consideration in the design.

Oculus is designed to connect students using the three different pathways at the center point. This building is located at the junction of three different carpark zones overlooking the spectacular view of Taylor's Lakeside Campus. The structure is contrast with the surrounding at the same time blend in with the key circulation of users. The facade of the structure act as a wall climbing for users to experienced indoor and outdoor game as well as a roof garden throughout the gateway.

Throughout this project, I am able to identify and analyze environemntal qualities and contextual needs of a site. Besides that, I can also able to apply the ideas of environmental sustainability that I have gained from precedent studies, Esd and Building Science in architectural design. I would like to thank my groupmate as well for the great team work.

P R O J E C T   2A - Site Analysis and Design Implications

This project requires students to propose a facility accommodating several related functions such as exhibition, learning and recreation in a suburban context. Besides that, we have to develop our own concept for the design based on our research of the area and environment. This working method allows us, students to design in near full-freedom. However, we will be required to make an informed response firstly to the surrounding context. Moreover, our capacity to respond architecturally and contextually to this task will form part of the basis upon which we will be marked.

In project 2A, students have to produce a site analysis to carry on for porject 2b. The site for this project is located in Pulau Banding, Gerik, Perak. Pulau Banding is a 243-hectare man-made island located within the majestic Temenggor Lake. The island sits amidst the 130 million years old Royal Belum Rainforest, known for nature based activities such as fishing, bird watching, camping and visiting orang asli settlements. Belum- Temenggor is divided into two sections. The Royal Belum is located up North right by the Malaysia-Thailand border while Temenggor is South of Belum. The Royak belum state park is entirely contained within the forest complex. EMKAY group, the owner and caretaker of the island, envisions the development of Banding island as a vital introduction to Royal Belum State Park and aims to position it as a premier heritage destination on the world ecotourism map. It operates the Belum Rainforest Resort that offers opportunity to get up close and personal with the natural world.

P R O J E C T   2B- Nature Appreciation Centre

This project calls for a design of a simple public building with some complexity that includes the complexity of site topography and vegetation, socio-cultural events, and variety of strategies for sustainable design. It explores design solutions that harness environmental qualities and conditions for human and environment sustainability through a project with a specific community of users. Students explore design solutions that reduce environmental impact utilising clustered spatial typology and passive design approach. The design work should contribute to and merge harmoniously with nature and the site, and provide the best of experiences for the users.

This project require students to design a nature appreciation centre with a minimum of 2 storeys. The building should provide a mized-use facility to accommmodate nature gallery, auditorium space, admistrative area, observation deck, cafeteria, children exploration area and reading and documentation room. Besides that, we are required to also provide access and parking for vehicles. Consideration for disable, public and private accesses and separation should also be provided in the building. The approximate floor area with the possibility to expand is 800 square metre.

Nature Appreciation Centre is a path to provide opportunities for increasing the communities’ knowledge understanding and appreciation of natural world. The main purpose of my design is to blend in with the surrounding site context and nature. This is because the bond of human with nature has been distanced day by day. Hence, I designed in a way that able the visitors to have sense of closeness with nature and captivating natural and cultural history during their visit in the centre. Through the understanding of site, I make use of the contour, land and also trees around the site such as using the slope to provide different viewing platforms and by understanding the sun and wind path to design building openings. The nature appreciation centre is designed to not cut down any of the surrounding trees but compromise with it such as using the trees as part of shades or shelter, cooling and separation of space and also to provide privacy and noise control to certain spaces. Therefore, this centre is designed to harmonize with rather than dominate its natural surroundings.
