P R O J E C T 1 - Synopsis : Reaction Paper
The aim for this reaction paper is for students to read a selected reading in relation to topic that has been discussed in lecture class and submit a reaction paper of the text. There is a total of 4 synopses for this assessment. This reaction paper requires students to analyse a text then develop commentary related to it. It requires a thoughtful reading, research and writing. It should identify the key points highlighted in the brief and then focus on personal perspective on issues raised through the text. In addition to students' personal perspective, students should identify experiences or insights that have shaped their perspective. Each student is given to prepare and submit a reaction paper as synopsis of the given reading according to their tutorial sessions. This reaction paper is formulated based on a few questions such as identifying the issues or problems, the main point of the readings, points and assumptions the author make and how did they back up their points, strength and weakness of the argument in text, lastly identify how the text relates to us and our understandings.
Through this assessment, I have learned to describe the theoritical issues relating to my studies in architecture and urbanism. Besides, this reaction paper encouraged me to read and to understand the architectural theories to contemporary architetcure and urban forms. During tutorial session, there will be a few students chosen among the tutorial group to do a short presentation regarding our understanding and opinions toward the readings which allowed us to discuss in a group and share different opinions towards the text we read.

Upon successful completion of this subject, I am able to provide critical perspectives on key issues within the contemporary discourse of architecture, through integration of case studies and theoritical studies. Besides that, I am able to analyse and critique the relationship between architecture and its social, cultural and intellectual context. I also learned to produce, orally and in writing, a critical interpretation of architecture and urbanism in relation to relevant theories within the contemporary discourse of architecture. I have gained a better understanding towards relevant theories which have shaped cities and experience around architecture, including its role as mediator between our society and its architecture. Last but not least, I learned to enhance the understanding of the complexity of architecture and the ability to undertake independent research.
P R O J E C T 2A - Identifying 5 Elements
In project 2, students were required to present an in-depth and analytical research study on the designated topic. Students are to explore the image of the cIty based on Kevin Lynch's most famous work, The Image of the City (1960) This project consisted of 2 parts, first identify Lynch's 5 elements; path, edges, districts, nodes and landmarks within a selected city and the second part is to produce an essay with a cognitive mapping of the city.

As for part 1, my tutorial group has divided into 4 groups and each group is given an area in PJ Old Town which is the Section 1, 2, 3, and 4 to identify the 5 elements in that section. Therefore, I was given to Section 4 in PJ Old Town. Petaling Jaya, Section 4, is located in the heart of the Petaling Jaya’s old town district. Section 4 can be clustered into four corners, and defined by the four main roads surrounding the area, namely Jalan Templer, Jalan Selangor, Jalan Othman, and Jalan Penchala, at the north, east, south, and west respectively.
Section 4 is a residential suburb that is part of greater Petaling Jaya city, which was originally intended to be developed as a satellite township for Kuala Lumpur. It consists of low rise apartments, single storey, and double storey houses.
The north-eastern corner of Section 4 is an institutional district where institutional and hospital landmarks can be found. The most prominent landmark in this corner would be Assunta Hospital. The other three corners of the area is predominantly residential and commercial districts. In the heart of Section 4 lies the religious district with a mosque serving as the landmark. Recent developments have maintained Section 4 as a residential district, supported by commercial facilities, such as a wet market at the south-west corner located along Jalan Othman.
P R O J E C T 2B - Illustrated Essay & Cognitive Mapping of Selected Urban Spaces
Part b of the project requires students to create cognitive mapping of selected significant urban spaces in the city of KL to understand one’s perception and spatial behaviour in cities today. Using the cognitive map students are required to present a critical understanding of emerging contemporary urbanism in KL city spaces (in relations to Kevin Lynch notions of imageability and how it influences people’s perception of the city. Besides that, mapping should contain: human facets (memory, identity etc.), spatial and temporal dynamics (traffic, people’s paths, barriers, etc.), architecture (stairs, benches, trees, etc.), microstructures (texture, material).
